Colorful Creations "Favorite Things" Blog Hop

Hello and welcome to the Colorful Creations My Favorite Things blog hop!  If you have arrived here from Michelle's blog welcome to the hop!! If you have stumbled across this by chance and want to play along then you can head back to the Colorful Creations site to start at the beginning.
Make sure to comment & follow my blog in order to be eligible to win the prize!

My name is Kerry McKenzie and here is my project showcasing my favorite things: layers and metals!  I have no idea why, but I love to feel LOTS of weight on my projects! Sometimes even to the point when I need to add chipboard as a backing to help support all the stuff I've added to it! I've found that layers and metals help me get this feeling of "WHOA, Loaded project coming through!" and so I've made them my favourite things about which to share as part of this blog hop!

For this blog hop, I've made a card.

It consists of 3 paper layers - including some layers of product packaging from Prima, a layer of Texturez paste from Shimmerz and a layer of cheesecloth from a RAK!!

The metals I included on this card include a 3-D bird cage, and a metal paper clip.

This is indeed a weight-y card, and I've had to add paper layers to the inside of it, in order to balance out the weight from the front of the card!  For those of you who are interested, this card weighs just over 30g. LOL

Here's a look at the card I made!

Thanks so much for joining us on the blog, make sure you hop on over to Connie's blog for more inspiration!

This card was made using the Cardabilities Sketch # 109 as inspiration  The sketch used for this card was:

Make sure you make Colorful Creations your last stop on the hop to see how to win the wonderful prize up for grabs!

Creative Scrappers #279 & A winner!

As the majority of my viewers know, I can pretty much only make layouts when I'm using a sketch. LOL

Now, in saying that, I would like to share with you a layout, including process video, of a layout I've made for Creative Scrappers for the current challenge!

But before I do that, I would like to let you know that Kristine over at Creative Scrappers has also recently released a 3rd version of her Creating with Sketches book! I've already purchased mine, but you can purchase it as an eBook, or as a physical copy! I'm going on a scrapbooking retreat this upcoming weekend, and so this could not have been released at a better time!

The process video for this layout can be watched here: http://youtu.be/oEUQe71c8m0 or you can click the Play button on the embedded video below!  The photos of the layout can be found below the video!

In addition to this layout, if you were in & around my blog during this past weekend, you know that I was part of the Scraps of Color blog hop!

I have some blog candy for one of the comment-leaving hoppers on my blog!

And the winner is...

Hi Kerry, what a great page and I'll always remember how much spunk, energy and fun you brought with you to the last retreat. It's always a joy getting to meet more SOC members in person. Love how you added the doodled tags to your take on the sketch. Hope to see you again next year!
Congratulations Tena!! If you can drop me a line at (kjmckenz@gmail.com) with your address and subject line: "SoC Blog Hop Winner", I will be able to get you out your goodies by the end of the week!!

Thank you to all who participated, and we hope to see you all around for ten more years to come!!

Many warm hugs to you all!!!

Turnt Up for 10! Celebrating 10 Years of SOC!

THIS BLOG HOP IS NOW OVER! THANKS TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED!!

Welcome welcome to the SoC 10th anniversary blog hop! My name is Kerry McKenzie and I would like to thank you for joining us on the hop and to welcome you to my blog!

I have been a member of the SoC community for just almost 2 years - I joined in March of 2013!  Since then I've been able to participate in swaps, go to a retreat and explore a whole new side of crafting (art journaling) in which I never thought I'd have much interest! I loved getting to meet some of the SoC ladies at the 2014 retreat and am so glad I made the trip down from TORONTO, CANADA to attend!!  It was a journey and a half getting there, and getting home, but I did it and am a better person for it.

SoC introduced me to a sisterhood that I would not be able to find in my neck of the woods, and as such is the case, I feel much more in tune with my whole self, and not just my crafty self. It has brought me in touch with people that I can relate to, and that understand things that not everyone might get!

Okay, well, I feel like this is getting a bit too sappy because this is supposed to be a post about CELEBRATION!! We're supposed to be getting turnt up!! :D

First step to getting turnt up - Getting excited about blog candy!!  Okay, so I know there's no photo of what the blog candy looks like, but let's just say that there may be some 6x6 paper pads, flowers, and bling included!!

Second step to getting turnt up - Knowing where you'll be hopping to next once you've gotten your groove on here!  The list of people participating in the blog hop is right here!  If you don't see a SoC celebration post at one of the stops, just make a quick note of it and check back later!

Now, the third step to getting turnt up - Check me out with mah sistahs! :D

I actually used a sketch from the Let's Get Sketchy Challenge that's going on right now! I posted a pic of the sketch at the bottom of this post.

As inspiration to how this layout was going to come together, I chose to use the challenge theme over at Challenge YOUrself. The theme was Affirmation!  There was a wonderful link provided to a series of titles or words of affirmation that was provided on the challenge blog, and the one I went with was: PERSONALITY!

With all the wonderful ladies that spent time with me at the SoC retreat this year, I met so many different personalities! Everyone liked to get crafty, everyone had a different history, everyone had a different way in which life affected the way they crafted and what projects they worked on during the weekend!

This was a great picture of all of us, that was taken the weekend of the retreat, and for those who were unable to attend this year, maybe this will convince you that you should totally aim to get turnt up next year at the next crop!! :D  We'll be waiting for you!!

The whole layout - I used the tag stamp that came in the Sept Studio Calico kit to create
my journalling spots!!  I've seen this done before, but couldn't quite remember where.
I loved the way it turned out!

A closer view of the photo I used, taken from our pink pajama day!

And here I am! And yes, my PJ's were pink... Sort of... They had other colours
in them as well, so they aren't super pink in this photo. ;)

And here is the sketch I used to build the layout above!!

Ok, so you've seen my turnt up layout about our yearly celebration of our crafty sistahs, each with our own individual personalities!!!

Time to head on over to Debra's blog: http://www.cdebbiscrap.blogspot.com/ in order to continue the turnt up vibe!!

Just to recap, in case you may need to review the lineup again, here it is!

Oh, You Know, Just Another (2) Card to Share. :)

Yep, Another card using the Prima Romance Novel collection - And this time, the inspiration is from another two challenges.

The first challenge being a sketch challenge - Where would I be without those sketch challenges???! No cards would ever be made. LOL

The sketch challenge for this card comes from the Sunday Stamps blog:

I chose to work with this sketch because it had diagonals in it... And since I've been on a roll lately with the funky shapes, I decided to try my hand at the diagonals as well.  I think it turned out alright!

The other challenge I chose to make this for is from the blog: the Order of Opus Gluei. The challenge on this blog was to make a project based on Time.

The Prima Romance Novel had a number of clock motifs to use, so I decided to turn the card into a time-oriented kind of card. :)

Now, because I had these diagonals cut from another piece of paper, I decided to make a second card with the same sketch in order to use them up. :)  Although it's not the card I chose to enter into the challenge, here it is!

Well, that is all for today, and I hope you come back to visit soon!

A Sweet Thing!

Recently found another card sketch challenge site called: the sweetest thing.

Since I'm on my venture to ram through my Prima Romance Novel papers, I decided to have a go at the sketch that was posted!

Yes, the sketch is done at a landscape orientation, but I chose to rotate it and give it a portrait kind of style. :)

I appreciate you taking the time to stop by, and hope to see you back here soon!

Clean, Simple with a Hint of Travel

This post is all about a card where the sketch comes from one place, while the theme comes from another.

I recently pulled out what's left of my very old and very coveted Prima Romance Novel collection. I decided I'm going to go through as much of it in as little time as possible, and so I'm getting the ball rolling!

This card is based on the sketch found on the CAS(E) challenge blog.

This card is ALSO based on the theme found on the SSS Wednesday Challenge blog: Travel.

I used packaging from one of the embellishment packs for the background, and used some black soot distress ink to grunge it up lightly. It can't be a "clean" card if it's too much grunge!

Then I cut the hot air balloon from one of the journalling cards that you could have purchased as part of the collection, and I used some scraps to make the script styled banner next to the balloon.

The letters are the TH label letters, and I've realized that they are my go-to letters for almost any dark lettering these days. I've gone through two packs in just over a month I think. I'm hooked!

Thank you very much for taking the time to drop by today, and I hope to see you back again soon!

Something for Me to Remember...

In my last post, I shared a layout I created for a good friend of mine and her new fiancé!

That was a layout I made specifically for them in order to add into a shadow box, and hand it off as a present, never to see it again.

Thankfully, I printed two of the same photos used in that layout - One in black & white, which was used in the previous layout, and one in colour, which I used in the layout I'm about to share with you in this post!

This layout was made based on the sketch found over on the Stuck?! Sketch challenge blog!

Look at all those diagonals!!

I've been working with a lot of shapes that I would normally not even consider in recent layouts, and so I decided to pull out my very 'unused' Studio Calico kit from last month and try to put together something to go with this layout sketch AND the photo that I have on hand!

The end result went something like this:

I got to even using some mesh like trim that I've had in my stash F.O.R.E.V.E.R. as the edge trimming between the diagonals.

I EVEN GOT TO USING MY CRICUT!  Yes, it seems so normal for those who use it regularly, but mine is so high up that I need a step stool to get to use it because I've been blessed with a compact form factor. LOL

In any case, I really liked how it turned out and is really making me consider using my cricut way more often now.

I hope you enjoyed the layout and we'll chat soon! :)

Once Upon a Time...

... There was a super cute couple who recently got engaged!

And no I'm not talking about me and some significant other, I'm talking about a lady & her beau that I met through mutual friends.

Although this layout is based on the Once Upon a Sketch challenge that has been posted for October, the theme of the layout was to be: The women/girls etc in our lives...

Sam is a wonderfully simple kind of lady with a lot of patience. She recently got engaged to a great guy and as a gift to them, I've made a series of layouts to celebrate their engagement and as gifts to them for their engagement present. :)

The layout for the sketch that was posted this month is:

And my take on the sketch is below...

It started out as a mixed media style of layout with masking and mists, but then I started layering and now it's a VERY dimensional somewhat mixed media layout. :)

I hope her and her new fiancé (!!!) like the series I've made them and I may post about all of them in a blog post in the near future.

Thanks so much for dropping in!
